Should I Quit My Job? A Sharper Way to Think About Leaving
You're drained and resentful, but you can't tell if the answer is to leave — or to change.
A Different Way to Look at It
'Should I quit?' is a yes/no question about a situation that's actually a range of situations. The sharper question is what's driving you out — the work, the people, the hours, or something you'd carry into any job. Quitting is an exit; the question is whether you're leaving toward something or just away.
Why this question is so hard
You're exhausted enough to want out but not clear enough on what comes next to leave.
You can't tell whether the problem is the job or you — and you're afraid it's you.
Money and stability keep a grip on you even when the job is grinding you down.
Different ways to look at the question
Decide what you'd actually be quitting first.
Quitting is never one decision. It's quitting the boss, the commute, the culture, the income, the title, or the version of yourself this place makes you. You'd make a different choice for each of those — and some of them can be quit without leaving at all.
Leaving toward beats leaving from.
If you quit to escape pain, you'll land in the same pain wearing a different company name. The answer doesn't live in the exit. It lives in knowing what kind of day and work you're building toward — and whether this job sits on that path or across the street from it.
The feeling pushing you out is information, not a command.
Your dread or burnout is telling you something real, but it isn't necessarily saying 'quit.' It might be saying this version of the job has ended for you — or that you've outgrown a way of working, not this workplace. Read the message before you obey the urge.
